Here’s The Latest Electric Hybrid Water Heater Industry Announcements

Back to News

Two important extensions were recently granted in support of your Electric Hybrid Water Heater (EHWH) business.

We've pulled together essential details about these state and regional announcements and provided resources below to support you. Here is what you need to know:

Washington CTA-2045 Requirement Suspension Extension

On March 1, 2022, the Washington Department of Commerce (WA DOC) announced a 120-day extension to the current CTA-2045 requirement suspension for all electric water heaters to be equipped with a CTA-2045 communications port, until June 29, 2022. It applies to both electric hybrid water heaters and electric resistance tanks.

This extended suspension is due to ongoing supply chain issues related to COVID-19 and industry-wide shortages of the components necessary to produce CTA-2045-equipped electric water heaters.

The initial emergency code amendment, issued November 1, 2021, followed the positive reception to a public hearing in which manufacturers, utilities, distributors, and energy implementers provided comments on the current global obstacles impeding on the rule implementation. The WA DOC will continue to regularly re-evaluate the decision and, if warranted, may extend the duration of the suspension.

In addition to the WA DOC’s recent extension, the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) is also extending the temporary postponement of the CTA-2045 requirement in the Advanced Water Heating Specification Qualified Products List 7.0 and forthcoming 8.0, until October 1, 2022. NEEA will continue to assess the supply chain to adjust the duration of this requirement suspension.

At this time, the Oregon Department of Energy’s (ODOE) effective date for CTA-2045 connection capability is still July 1, 2022.
