WASHINGTON STATE HEAT PUMP WATER HEATER CODES UPDATE

Posted: Jun 06, 2013

The Washington Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) recently released a code interpretation that classifies heat pump water heaters as household appliances. Due to this decision, heat pump water heaters could qualify for permitting exemptions when replacing a "like in kind" standard electric water heater.

Previously heat pump water heaters were subject to additional permitting requirements not in place for standard electric water heaters. Refer to the Washington L&I Electrical Currents newsletter for details and verify with local jurisdictional entities to confirm code specifics for specific areas.
