Cozy Up with Large Tank Heat Pump Water Heaters

In April 2015, National Appliance Energy Conservation Act updates took effect to create higher baseline standards for large tank electric water heater efficiency. Since the standards took effect, large tank electric sales haven't reached their full potential in the market. We encourage you to become familiar with the technology to better serve your customers and offer heat pump water heater technology as the standard replacement for existing electric water heat, especially in installations that require a tank larger than 55 gallons. Be aware that work-arounds for large tank installations may have negative impact on warranty coverage, performance and product longevity. Correctly sizing your customers water heater will ensure their hot water needs are met for years to come.

Take Advantage of Heat Pump Water Heater Tax Credits

Congress recently passed legislation that retroactively extends federal residential energy efficiency tax credits to 2015 installations and is available for new purchases through the end of 2016. Let your customers know that their 2015 and 2016 installation may be eligible. Visit the ENERGY STAR® website to learn more.

Additionally, Oregon and Montana recently implemented new 2016 Residential Energy Tax Credit (RETC) changes that affect tax credit categories and qualifications for heat pump water heaters. Oregon 2015 Tier 2 tax credit amounts of $985 and Tier 1 incentive of $585 are still available for units purchased by December 31, 2015 and installed by March 31, 2016. The new 2016 rates are as follows:

  • Oregon now offers up to $600 for Tier 2 and greater heat pump water heaters and up to $300 for Tier 1. More information can be found here.
  • Montana now offers up to $300 for heat pump water heaters with an Energy Factor (EF) of 2.0 or greater, or up to $500 if combined when other energy investments are claimed. More information can be found here.

New Utility Rebates Available

New utility incentive programs have launched in Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. There are now more than 50 utility rebate programs in the region. Contact your local utility to learn about their offerings and eligibility requirements. Informing your customers about available utility rebates can increase your sales and let customers know how affordable heat pump water heater technology can be.
