Thanks to our growing partnerships with installers, the Smart Water Heat initiative continues to see significant heat pump water heater (HPWH) sales and installations throughout the region. We are eager to build on this momentum in 2015, and hope you'll read on to learn more about exciting new product advancements and promotion opportunities.

New GE Tier 3 GeoSpring

GE's new GeoSpring HPWH has been added to the Northern Climate Specification Qualified Products List.The new GeoSpring is the first product to meet the highest efficiency Tier 3. The higher energy savings will certainly be attractive to consumers looking for a new water heater. Key product details include:

  • Listed as both Tier 2 and Tier 3 qualified
  • Available in 50- and 80-gallon sizes
  • Offered at both retail and wholesale

2015 GE Promotion

Smart Water Heat is collaborating with GE for a single, extended 2015 promotion on the GE GeoSpring 50- and 80-gallon units. Key promotion details include:

  • Promotion runs March 1 - December 31, 2015 or while funds last
  • $300 markdown on GeoSpring units through GE's Northwest supply chain
  • GE's supply chain partners may also offer additional markdowns

New A.O. Smith

We are excited to announce that 14 A.O. Smith manufactured HPWHs have also been added to the Northern Specification Qualified Products List. A.O. Smith has a family of brands available in both the retail and wholesale channels. Key details include:

  • Tier 1 qualified units
  • Available in 66- and 80-gallon sizes
  • Products include: A.O. Smith, State, American, Whirlpool, Reliance, U.S. Craftmaster and Lochinvar

2015 Federal Standards Update

Big changes to federal water heater standards take effect April 16, 2015 with minimum standards increasing to reduce energy waste and save customers money. Electric water heaters using heat pump technology will be the only products that meet the new requirements for water heaters greater than 55 gallons. 2014 Highlights Include:

  • 3,477 total sales and installations; 3,197 Tier 1 and 280 Tier 2
  • 6 promotions executed in partnership with 4manufacturers; 32 utilities with rebates further promoted promotion incentive dollars
  • 39 utilities offering HPWH incentives
  • 361 QA visits, 74% pass rate (80% contractor install pass rate and 62% self-install pass rate)

Federal Tax Credits Extended

Congress passed legislation retroactively extending federal residential energy efficiency tax credits to 2014 installations. Consumers who installed a HPWH in 2014 may be eligible for this incentive. Oregon also made changes to its state residential energy efficiency tax credits. Learn more
